INTRODUCING THE KIMBERLEY REGION

The Kimberley Region could be described as one of the last areas where adventure minded travellers can still go to experience the true Australian wilderness.

The rugged Kimberley Region can be divided into 3 main geographical districts: The North Kimberley includes Mitchell Falls which is one of the most scenic and biologically important areas in Western Australia. The West Kimberley includes nearly all of the other gorges that we visit heading along the Gibb River road and wildlife here is generally found concentrated around densely vegetated waterholes. The South-East Kimberley includes the area south of Kununurra and its most famous landmark is the Bungle Bungles.

To see the Kimberley region properly, passengers should be prepared to endure a few hardships and can sometimes expect to spend 4 - 5 hours travelling between destinations due to poor road conditions. Our vehicles carry a maximum of 9 passengers with side facing seats in the rear. Unlike a bus, these are great social vehicles as our group all face each other. This means that driving time can be spent enjoyably socializing, playing games and having fun (instead of sleeping).

DAY 1:

Pick up from your accommodation starts at 6:30am and our first stop for the day is to take in some great scenery as we hike along the rivers edge of Windjana Gorge. The huge, vertical cliffs stretching out on either side of the gorge are made from an ancient reef that the Lennard River has now cut a gorge through. This area is always plentiful with bird life and it also gives you the chance to have a look at some freshwater crocodiles which can be easily found. Next it's time to do a bit of caving as we take a walk through Tunnel Creek. This 750 metre long cave system requires you to wear bathers and carry a torch if you wish to fully explore the area. It is an unforgettable experience walking in waist deep icy cold water in the dark in a cave that has its fair share of bats flying around. From here we make our way to our campsite where you can enjoy your first evening in the unspoilt Kimberley wilderness. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Camp: Bush Camp
Walking: 6km

DAY 2:

From here we at say goodbye to the Gibb River Road and head out to the Victoria Highway where you can enjoy the smooth ride via the sealed highway through to Turkey Creek. We turnoff here and head into the Bungle Bungles on a track that is slow and rough, taking 2 hours to do the 50km stretch. The Bungle Bungle ranges consist of 200-400 metre high rounded beehive-shaped domes with horizontal coloured bands of orange, black and grey.Their destinctive shapes have been produced by uplift and erosion over the last 20 million years and they can only be described as spectacular. After setting up camp we go to a nearby lookout and as the sun sets you can watch the magnificent stripped domes of the bungles changing color, totally awesome. Tonight you can enjoy a candlelit dinner in the heart of the Kimberley then have a go at playing the didgeridoo. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Camp: Bungle Bungles (toilets/showers)
Walking: 2km

DAY 3:

Today we spend the full day exploring around the Bungles. Start the day with an optional helicopter flight over the area (own expense $175 for 18 minutes). The first stop is Cathedral Gorge in the south. It is a fairly easy walk that leads to a huge pool in the famous beehives of the Bungle Bungle ranges. Next you can enjoy a spectacular walk amongst the colourfully banded domes as we hike through Piccaninny Gorge. On the northern side we visit Echidna Chasm, a long narrow gorge with 150 metre high sheer rock faces which you can walk between for a considerable distance. This afternoon we make our way back towards the highway and after setting up camp where you get the chance to watch another spectacular Bungles sunset. In the evening you can spend some time stargazing under the southern skies. (Breakfast, lunch, Dinner)
Camp: Bush Camp
Walking: 8km

DAY 4:

This morning we make our way up to Kununurra then back onto the Gibb River road to reach El Questro Station. A couple of the magnificent gorges on El Questro station are Emma Gorge and El Questro Gorge. Both of these gorges feature great scenery and cool, clear water. Take some time exploring one of these gorges and enjoy swimming in the crystal clear pools. Our drive from here takes us across the border from Western Australia into the Northern Territory and we camp in Keep River National Park. A short walk to the lookout here provides you with an ideal location for watching a beautiful sunset. The evening is open to wildlife spotting, playing didgeridoo, stargazing or just relaxing - the choice is yours. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Camp: Bush Camp
Walking: 6km

DAY 5:

Our day is spent today pretty well driving from Keep River National Park through to Darwin. Fortunately, our vehicles have side facing seats in the rear so unlike a bus, these are great social vehicles as our group all face each other. This means that driving time can be spent enjoyably socializing, playing games and having fun with your tour group. We stop in at Katherine for a break on the way and you can take a swim in the clear waters of the Katherine River. We finally arrive at your Darwin accommodation in the early evening. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Walking: 1km

Windjana Gorge
El Questro Station
Tunnel Creek
