Odyssey Tours & Safaris
Overnight Bush Experience - Self Drive
To Litchfield National Park 100klm from Darwin

If you have a 2WD or 4WD and plan to visit Litchfield, staying in the Park may be a better option for you as you can see as much of the Park as you wish and experience the serenity of Litchfield Park at Night.

Our secluded safari camp 'Minjungari' (local Aboriginal word for blue waterlilly) offers just that opportunity. Tucked away in a hidden corner on two beautiful billabongs lined by huge paperbark trees. Minjungari is ideally situated to explore the southern reaches of the park.

Getting There

Meet your Odyssey host at :
Monsoon Cafe in time to depart at 15.30hours
Green Ant Creek Car Park & Picinic Area in time to depart at 16:00

The journey is about 10km, mostly along a 4WD track and you will encounter a number of creek crossings, at least one which will require your special attention as you ford the stream.

Along the narrow tracks you will encounter corrugations, potholes & sandy conditions.

Make sure sure you have 4WD engaged throughout the journey after you leave the tar road, take care and drive slowly following the Odyssey escort vehicle.

Minjungari Safari Camp

Opened from May 2nd, 2006 until November 19th, 2006.

Comfortable safari-style tents equipped with two single beds. The 'Safari-Tents' are purpose designed and built for our tropical climate

Minjungari (pronounced Min-joon-yaree) is located within Litchfield National Park which is approximately 12 degrees south of the equator and is subject to the North West monsoon which brings the majority of the rainfall in the months from December to March.

The average daily maximum temperature varies from 31 degrees Celsius in July to around 38º C in the hotter months, October/December. Overnight minimums are as low at 10ºC in July and as high as 28º C in the hotter months.

Much of Litchfield was once inhabited by the Werat, Kungarakanj, Maranugu and Warai people who are the traditional owners of the area. The name of Odyssey's safari camp, Minjungari, means Blue Water Lily in the Kungarakanj language.

On arrival you will be shown to your accommodation and shown the location of the showers and toilets and how they operate.

Minjungari is a bush camp and there are many wild animals around the camp – most are harmless to you but you must be careful to always wear closed footwear around the camp and not to venture too close to the edge of the water as there is a large estuarine crocodile living in the billabong.

Please keep your tent closed at all times to reduce the risk of unwanted insects and other small creatures coming into visit!

Your host can give you more information about what animals, large and small, that you might encounter during your stay.

The birdlife at Minjungari can be simply stunning. The break of dawn here is an experience not to be missed and guided dawn walks will be offered by your Host.

Facilities - Hot showers and composting toilets (shared facilities) are available

Meals

Meals (dinner and breakfast) - Freshly prepared and campfire cooked

Meals will be served in the dining tent at fixed times which will depend upon time of year and other factors. Normally dinner will be served between 19:00 and 19:30, breakfast betwen 07:30 and 08:00. The actual meal times during your visit will be advised to you by your Host. Please ask if you are uncertain.

If you have any special dietary requirements please advise us at the time of booking – to tell us when you arrive is too late.

We do not provide alcoholic drinks at the camp. If you wish to have wine or other drinks with your dinner please purchase it and bring it with you. When selecting your drinks please bear in mind that we will have limitations on space in the ice box.

Departure Arrangements

The Escort Vehicle leaves camp at 10:00 and will lead you back to the camp gate some 3 kilometres away. From there you will easily find your way to your next destination in Litchfield or beyond.

Those choosing to stay more than one night will need to make arrangements with the camp hosts if they wish to leave or return at times other than the standard arrival and departure times. Your host will endeavour to accomodate your wishes but some flexibility may be required.

THE ODYSSEY DIFFERENCE

  • Scheluded tours operate with a maximum of just 10 or 12.
  • Operating 3 permanently established camps - two in Kakadu National Park and one Litchfield National Park. All camps have large "airy tents' with raised wooden floors and 2 standard size single beds. Camps are equipped with flushing toilets and insect proof dining shelters. Our Litchfiled camp 'Minjungari' is on an exclusive license.
  • Odyssey Tours and Safaris is a Savannah Guide "Master Operator". Odyssey guides are educated professionals. All are naturalist guides with various interests and knowledge who have a passion for the Top End.
  • We operate with a number of licenses that give us special access to restricted area ie: Koolpin Gorge, Graveside Gorge in Kakadu National Park, Minjungari in Litchfield National Park, Manyallaluk Aboriginal Community south of Katherine.
  • Our itineraries are set at a slower pace than most as our philosophy is to offer not just a sightseeing tour but a wilderness experience that will enlighten, educate and enrich our guests.
  • Dinner time in camp is a candle lit affair with tablecoths, silerware, wine glasses etc. All diets are catered for - prior advised is required.
  • Each of our permanent private camps has it's own "Camp Host" ensuring the highest quality safari hospitality. Solar fridges at all camps and Solar fans in the dinning area if dining inside
